State of Oaxaca

Vivo Resorts is in the state of Oaxaca "Wah-hah-kah", almost directly south of Winnipeg—about 3,780 km —and sits as far south as Belize and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most culturally rich and diverse regions. You can experience the best of Oaxaca—whether it’s savoring authentic Oaxacan cuisine like mole and tamales oaxaqueños, exploring its Indigenous heritage, or visiting the birthplace of mezcal, Mexico’s smoky agave spirit.

Oaxaca is generally considered one of the safer states in Mexico for tourists, but like any travel destination, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid remote areas at night, and follow local advice.

Discover Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a vibrant state known for its stunning Pacific coastline, rich Indigenous heritage, colorful festivals, world-famous cuisine, and as the birthplace of mezcal.

We have a local guide who can provide a variety of tour options if you are interested.

Puerto Escondido - Nearest Town

Puerto Escondido is a laid-back beach town with a population of around 30,000, famous for its stunning beaches, world-class surfing, and vibrant local culture.

It’s home to Playa Zicatela, one of the best surf spots in the world. Beyond surfing, visitors can enjoy tranquil beaches like Carrizalillo and La Punta, take boat tours to see dolphins and sea turtles, or explore the lively local markets and delicious Oaxacan cuisine.

While it has grown in popularity, Puerto Escondido still retains its authentic and relaxed vibe.

Chila "CHEE-lah" - Nearest Village

Chila is a small, peaceful town located just 10 km from Vivo Resorts with a population of around 6,700 residents.

The majority of employees at Vivo Resorts come from Chila, making it a vital part of the local community.

The town offers an authentic glimpse into everyday life in Oaxaca, where you might see chickens or goats wandering the streets, and tuk-tuks zipping by.

You can pick up a few groceries, buy fresh chicken, or enjoy an authentic local meal.

Very little English is spoken here, so knowing a few Spanish words and using sign language can go a long way.
